Bio Photo Experience Thailand & Cambodia Itinerary

January 20 to February 5, 2012

Our Bio Photo Experience tour group will meet in the Town of Siem Reap Cambodia, near Angkor Wat, the largest religious structure in the world, On January 21, 2012. This is the first of many UNESCO World Heritage sites we’ll experience on our travels. The next three days will be spent learning about the fascinating Angkor culture here, and at other palaces and temples throughout this region. We will travel by air conditioned vehicles to an ancient city which once had a population of over one million, and see stone carvings of thousands of figures depicting Cambodian life in the 12th century. Photography at these locations will be timed to capture this ancient splendor in the best possible light. Our small group will also photograph many rare and endangered species of wildlife and meet with the scientists who work hard to preserve the fragile biodiversity of Cambodia.

On January 25th we will fly to Bangkok, Thailand. The cost of this flight is included in the tour fee, as is all ground transport, lodging, food, personal guides, and admission charges. We will stay at a hotel downtown located near Ko Ratanakosin, Bangkok’s area of magnificent and photogenic temples and palaces. We will tour the Khlongs (canals) of Bangkok and visit floating markets in traditional long-tailed boats, and observe people living their daily lives traditionally in this unique water world. And we will sample some of Thailand’s fabulous cuisine.

On January 27 we will depart Bangkok for the Thai countryside via air conditioned van (driven by a professional driver). We will visit the ancient city of Ayutthaya, located on an island 2 hours north of Bangkok. We can visit the vast complexes of ruins, once the capital of Siam, on elephant taxis. We may also tour the lighted temple areas at night, for some amazing photo opportunities! The next morning we will travel north to Lopburi, one of Thailand’s oldest cites, and spend the day learning about these early Khmer Empire palaces and shrines from our own personal anthropologist! The present-day town is located in the midst of the ruins, and we can observe modern small-town Thailand at the same time. Lopburi is also famous for its troupe of monkeys.

leftWe will take a leisurely drive, with photo stops along the way, to the town of Sukhothai on January 29. Located in north central Thailand, this small town and its ruins are located in a beautiful park surrounded by mountains. This UNESCO heritage complex of over forty temples can easily be seen using bicycles! Sukhothai is also the home to a world famous 40-foot statue of Buddha. We will stay here for two nights.

Khao Yai National Park is located in Northeast Thailand. We will drive through the countryside on January 31, from Sukhothai to Khao Yai Park, stopping to photograph landscapes, experience traditional Thai culture and sample local food in rural villages. Khao Yai is one of the largest parks in Thailand, covering five vegetation zones, and is one of the few remaining monsoon forests in all of Asia. There are many waterfalls and caves in the park. It is also home to over 150 species of animals and 320 species of birds, many of them extremely rare! A large herd of elephants makes this UNESCO heritage park its home as well. We have hired a Thai biologist who knows Khao Yai intimately for all of our 3 nights here. He will ensure that we see many of the park’s exotic inhabitants and explain the significance of this region.

We return to Bangkok on the morning of February 4th, in the morning. We will see the 46 meter long Reclining Buddha, have a leisurely dinner and stay at a downtown hotel. On Sunday February 5th We will visit the beautiful Wat Arun, or Temple of the Dawn in Bangkok before returning home.
